Shoreham-by-Sea Sunset

This panorama of the sunset over the River Adur was one of several taken during a Summer Workshop run by Steve Broad for members of Steyning Camera Club.

The evening suffered from dull skies and flat lighting as we walked the river bank, searching for inspiration from the famous houseboats and the birdlife on the mudflats.

As we neared the pub at the end of the trek the sun finally broke through the cloud cover and members scurried to grab a few shots.

The camera used was a Minolta Dimage 7 with a monopod for support. Manual exposure and manual focus were chosen. After panning from left to right across the whole scene to select a suitable exposure to give detail in both highlights and shadows, the chosen settings were - aperture was f5.6 and shutter speed was 1/20.

I changed the focus screen to it's grid function. This makes following the horizon much more straight forward.

A similar image has been used in the Tutorial on stitching panoramas, which can be found in the Tutorial section of this site.

The image above has a series of hyperlinks, indicated by the white boxes, to show the detail in small sections of the image.

Number of images to make the total panorama was seven.
